Works Spreadsheet doesn't automatically open

Nov 26, 2010 11:21PM PST

Trying to help my sister on her "new", this year, computer - Compaq desktop - Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) - 2.80GHz - Multi-core - 500 Gig Hard Drive - 2816 Megs Memory - current on all windows updates - normal scans with anti-virus are clean - zone alarm firewall - most preinstalled software left intact, including "Microsoft Works Suite 9.0.

Her old computer, Hp, windows me, had also preinstalled, Microsoft works suite. We transferred over all her old files. The 'word processor' files open without issue. When we tried to open the spreadsheet files, ".xlr" file extension, we got an error message. Eventually I discovered that if I right click and select open with, then select spreadsheet, that I could get them to open. I copied and pasted into a "new" spreadsheet, saved it giving it a new name. Went to open same, and again, I could not open this new file "automatically". Did the right click, open with - spreadsheet - and I was able to open the file. But this should not be.

Using Google, I just found something - Change which programs Windows uses by default - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default . Before I go back to my sisters house, in the next day or two, I'm hoping someone can tell me if I'm on the right track or that there's a different or better answer.

Appreciate any help or guidance,
Eddie

ASSOCIATIONS are the right thoughts here.

The ".xlr" spreadsheet file was associated with the "word" processor program, changed it so that it was associated to the "spreadsheet" program and problem was resolved.
Thanks again, Bob
