Word XP Save Prompt @ "Every" Close

Aug 13, 2005 8:19PM PDT

OS is XP with SP2 installed, plus all critical updates. Microsoft Office XP with SP3 installed.

Every since I installed M$ Office XP when I open a saved document and make NO CHANGES to it, then attempt to close the document I get a prompt asking if I want to save "the changes" to the document. I have NOT make any changes to the document.

I thought maybe that M$ Office SP3 would correct this anomaly, but it didn't. This did not occur when I had the version of Office that came with XP, nor did it occur when I had Office 2000 installed.

How can I get rid of this prompt asking if I want to save changes when I didn't make any changes to the document.

Thank,

G.F.K.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=816473 says it's only applicable to Word 2002, but you might give it a try for XP. Although I use Word XP at work, I didn't know this feature, but Word XP seems to have it also: http://thestore.pa.com.au/SmartTags/Default.html, for example.

Also note that just printing with changed settings changes the document. It might be that it even happens if your default printer is a different from when you saved the document.
Does this message really come if you File>Open, File>Close (answer yes), then immediately again File>Open, File>Close.

There could be something in normal.dot. Delete it and see what happens.

Your Fix Did It!

Kees:

First I tried your ''Does this message really come if you File>Open, File>Close (answer yes), then immediately again File>Open, File>Close'' and still had the same problem.

Next I went to your '' http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=816473 says it's only applicable to Word 2002, but you might give it a try for XP'' and followed those instructions. That did the trick. You were right, it also applies to Word XP as well as Word 2002.

Thanks so much for your help.
