Question

Word won't open from taskbar

Sep 8, 2014 11:00AM PDT

I have windows 8.1 and have been using Word97 on it just fine. My Excel97 still works ok. But now when I open Word or double click on my document it just puts it on the taskbar and doesn't open the window on the screen. When I hover over it on the taskbar it shows the docs that are open but I can't get it max. I restarted and the same thing. Anything I can try or fix before I try reinstalling it?

After I learned how to start in Safe Mode. Needed to to do that anyway. OK Word opened in Safe and I closed word and opened it again from the desktop shortcut in safe and it seemed ok. So I was hoping that reset any normal.dot or config files. Then I restarted the computer normally and tried the Word desktop icon. Nope, it stuck in on the task bar. BUT this time when I right clicked on the task bar it gave me the usual choices of max, min, etc. so I did max and it opened up. But it was only a one time deal. I closed Word and tried again but it just went to the task bar and I don't get the choices again.

If I get a doc "open" like clicking on it in the list that pops up on word on the task bar I can right click on it and get it maximized BUT BUT I want to have it open only on half my screen. What are the 2 buttons in the upper right...Minimize and Restore Down? What's the diff?

I got it the way I want it. Hopefully I can keep it going

I'll probably have to do some clicking around when I first try to open word each session. But I just dragged the title bar down and could move it to the left half where I wanted it. I wasn't getting the hand icon at the top middle to drag it so I tried just grabbing the title and it worked.

Answer
Just delete the icon/shortcut in the taskbar

and recreate it. Then repin it to the taskbar.
