Word Mail Merge changing field to 0

when I am sending a mail merge from word 2003. it is ocasionaly changing one of the fields to a 0 on the print file. it is mergeing from excell 2003. the word doc also has images in it. has anyone else had this problem, is there a fix. im usaly sending about 2000 records.

Are you sure there is a valid number in the source, and that the field in Word has the right format?

My always-working solution to this kind of problems: define a text-column in Excel, fill it with a text-string using the text-function and use that in het mail-merge like any other text-field. Zero conversion errors in Word guaranteed, because text-fields aren't converted. And it's easy to check in Excel.
