Question

Word locking up

by DawnW / January 5, 2016 8:12 AM PST

Hi: I have Windows 7 and use Word 2002 because my boss has a lot of clients that user older versions and she doesn't want to upgrade. I do transcription. She always sends a transcript that she has started in Word with the way it is to be set up and everything. I have always just opened the attachment in Yahoo and it would open in Word. It is usually named something that is pretty long. Lately when I try to open it, it will shorten the name of it, and when I click on it to open it, it says "unknown file type" and it will give me a list of programs to open it with. I have to select Word, and then it will open. It will then create two different types of files, one a Word file and one that says File. Today I have an attachment from her with a zip file containing a bunch of setups, and I cannot open it at all. Word locks up as soon as I try to open it, and she has tried sending them individually. Is something going on with Word or is it my email? I had her try to send them through my AOL email, and that doesn't work either. I am pretty computer i;literate, so if anyone can help me, please be specific in your instructions. Thanks!

But try changing your process. Save the doc to your work folder of choice and be sure it ends in .DOC or such.

Sometimes the newer antivirus and email scanners mess up opening it directly from the email.

Word 2002 (and 2003) have been unsupported for a while.

I recommend upgrading to at least Office 2007. You may have clients on older versions of Office, but in all likelihood you've got clients with 2007 and later too. Newer versions will open older documents, but older versions will not open newer ones in .DOCX format. As a possible alternative, you might give the free LibreOffice a try. I know it opens most Word docs and it's free. You can download & install it from ninite.com.

Good luck.

Word locking up

After spending all day and until 11:00 tonight, my boss and I just discovered that the entire problem with the zip file and being able to open this project was because of the logo that this company had on the transcript. It must have something proprietary in it. We do projects for big companies like HP and Kimberly-Clark and have never had an issue, and this is a small client that I've never even heard of. What a pain and wasted day, but at least it's figured out! I discovered also that if I open the files that she sends with Internet Explorer, it retains the correct file name, so now I'm thinking the problem with the file name has something to do with something that happened with Google Chrome recently.

Thanks for your answers! If anyone has any suggestions on the Google Chrome file name problem, please let me know.
