Word Document grows when saved

Feb 10, 2008 7:31PM PST

I working as a PC technician in Cape Town, and I have a client that had this word document saved as a template. Not the .dot template, but a .doc that she keeps as a template. She has the problem when she fills in the template, that it wil grow from 200KB to 15MB when saved. I mailed the document to myself in my office to have a look at it, and no luck at all. I tried saving it to a .dot(Template), to another file name.doc but still no luck. After saving it, and compressing it, it will go back to 270KB. But I cant tell my client that she has to send it to everyone compressed. I would like to help her out, but I need someone to help me out..

Thanks in advanced.

If it happens both with her and with you, it's not a problem on that specific PC, but a feature (bug?) of Word, I'm afraid.

- What version of Word?
- What happens if it's saved as .rtf?
- Why not send it as pdf? You shouldn't send Word-documents unless they are meant to be edited.

did you check the options in Tools>Options>Save? Options that could influence the size of the document are:
- Fast saving
- Including of true type fonts
- Including of infolabels

Getting Closer!!

Hey, thanks a lot for your quick reply. Much appreciated. My first time on this forums, and I'm sticking with this site..

Well, I tried everything you mentioned, and still no luck. I'm using word 2003 with SP3 and she is using Word 2003 but not too sure about the SP.. When I save it as .rtf, it grows beyond imagination...93MB.

I now went and broke down the entire document (copied out the test and everything else)..And noticed that the header is not a header, It's a full A4 size picture.. But the question is still. How is it possible to have the document at 200KB but when resaving it, it grows to 15MB..

When I remade the document, it is 193KB and when I resave it, it actually saves as a 200KB file with Info added to it..

So I'll send her the one I remade, but would still like to know what went wrong..
Thanks so far for all your help.
