Word Crashes After Installing OneNote

Feb 8, 2007 7:16AM PST

Hello CNET community,

Prior to installing OneNote 2003 on my machine, Word used to run perfectly. But after installing OneNote, Word now crashes every single time I try to run it. OneNote, on the other hand, remains functioning. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or could link me to a site that fixes the problem? I'd really appreciate the help.

Note: I haven't tested to see if my other Office 2003 applications were affected, but I do know for sure that Word is in pain at the moment...

Oops, I forgot to mention...

Oops, I forgot to mention that I'm running a Windows XP Professional machine, and that Microsoft Word was part of the Office 2003 Professional suite whereas OneNote 2003 was on a separate, stand-alone CD.

Hi Bob,

After entering in "winword /safe", Word attempts to load and suddenly I'm bombarded with a "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem" dialog box. In the box is also a radio button that allows me to choose whether or not I'd like to "Recover my work and restart Microsoft Word". And below are the typical buttons for choosing to send the error report or not to Microsoft.

With the option to recover my work checked, and clicking on either sending or not sending the error report, I get a new dialog box telling me that "Word failed to launch in safe mode. Would you like to 'Detect and Repair'? I click Yes and a new message window appears saying "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office OneNote 2003". Once the process is completed and I try to run Word again, I receive the same error message.

If I chose to uncheck that "recover my work" option earlier, then the entire Word application simply shuts off.

Sorry, no exact cure that I know of.

I'd do the uninstall and reinstall dance on Office. My sneaking suspicions are anti virus suites (addons) or other. Sadly that safe mode didn't nail down that hunch. So I'm back to the shotgun.

Heh, that's okay. I decided to just get rid of OneNote altogether since I'd rather have Word working. Thanks for the help anyways.
