" it is possible that Word?s default document template (Normal) has become corrupted. "

Please don't tell me this link is about some Word product, I'm using this article since I don't want to type the answer in.

Until yesterday all was well with Word 98. I have ordered Office 2004, and it should be here soon, but even after I get it, I shall need 98, now and then, so I can refer to it when my mother runs into trouble with a Word file on her computer. I need it to run properly.
Last night I started to type in Word, and things got stranger and stranger. Sometimes, when I typed a word, many of the characters repeated, over and over (e.g., loooooseleaaaaf); at other times a tab space would suddenly be inserted instead of a regular space.
In addition, all the while that Word is open, there's a flashing thing that looks like an exclamation point with a small i in it, but there's no corresponding application in the place where you find that kind of thing in OS 9. Only Word and Finder. Finder brings me to the OS X Finder window.
Could it be connected with the fact that Iomega, maker of Zip drives (which were giving me trouble last week) keeps bugging me to register my drive(s)? Both the internal one?in which a disk got stuck?and the external one given to me by my nephew are too old for me to be registering them now. Anyway, what would that have to do with Word? I ask only because of the Zip mess and the fact that the flashing thing seems to have an i in it?like Iomega! Farfetched, yes, spooky indeed!
Any ideas, anyone?
Thanks,
jenny
I tried trashing preferences (I think I got them all), reinstalling Word, zapping the PRAM?even though this is happening only with Word. I am about to go crazy. Until I have Word 2004, I'll need 98, and as I indicated, I'll need to keep 98 even after that.
