Word 2007 sometimes will not open

Jan 27, 2010 12:22AM PST

When I was using Word 2007 under XP I never had a problem with it not opening, or closing while in use. Now that I am using WIndow7 64-bit, I regularly have the problem that:

A. If I try to open Word directly, I often get a message that "There is a problem with Word. Windows is searching for a solution." (Paraphrased.) Invariably the result is that Word shuts down. The only recourse I have found is to restart the computer. Happens several times a day.

B. Sometimes even while working with a document, I get the same message and result. The error occurs more often if I have a document open and then try to open another one.

I don't recall the same problem with Excel 2007, and have only used Power Point 2007 once (no problem at that time).

Is there a way to "repair" word 2007? Must I reinstall it?

HP Pavilion p6247, Athlon CPU, 2.3 GHz, Windows 7 64-bit; Microsoft Office 2007 Pro.

Thanks,

Vince

Sometime Word 2007 will not open
Jan 28, 2010 10:29AM PST

Thanks for the several replies.

I do intend to check out Open Office. "Soon."

I ran the Win Troubleshooter, with no apparent action taken. I also uninstalled Paper Port (as suggested by one of the links).

Word has been working perfectly for the past two days, with many openings and closings, several documents being open, etc.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks to all,

Vince

Another Solution?
Jan 29, 2010 3:41AM PST

Tara,

Thanks. Word 2007 has been operating flawlessly for two days now. Maybe I'm temporarily lucky. If it begins acting up again, I will uninstall/reinstall.

But another problem has cropped up: When I got this new computer it came with Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Trial installed. However, because my old computer is defunct, I installed my purchased copy of Office 2007 Professional. (Oddly, I was not warned that this copy had already been installed when I registered it.) I went through the activation process for all the Office elements with no glitch.

Today, I got a popup message that said that my trial copy was about to terminate, so I tried entering the Product Key from my Office Pro CD. It was rejected.

I looked at Programs on the COntrol Panel and saw that there is a listing for Home and Student Trial as well as Office 2007 Pro. May I safely uninstall the Trial package? (I'm hoping that uninstalling will not upset anything in Office Pro, especially Outlook - because I am not sure exactly how I got Outlook to finally work. Going through that process again, with its Address Book quirks is a little daunting.)

I would like to uninstall the trial version of Office 2007, however.

Thanks for your continued help,

Vince

If...

You decide to go with Open Office, keep in mind the default file extension on documents are ODT and CAL for Spread Sheet. Choose the one from MS on the Pull Down menu. MS Office does not recognize anything beside the MS Office Realm. With Open Office you can even read old types of files, even Word Perfect that are used by Lawyers and change them to MS format if you wish.

Very flexible piece of software for free.

remove and reinstall

You should be able to safely uninstall all of the Microsoft Office 2007 software then reinstall Microsoft 2007 using your disk and product key. Hopefully this will resolve the issue before doing anything too invasive.

Hello There,
Using different OS can create problem, you might be problem for the version of office. You can check the version of the file which you are using. Or if still you finds that the there is a problem in opening the file then you need to repair word on office 2007. This ask can be easily accomplished by using the trail version downloads. There are number of software available on internet and can easily be downloaded. If the trial version download works for you then you can go for the complete version of it.

Try to open the Microsoft word in the safe mode. If does not uninstall and reinstall in safe mode only. Restart your system
