Word 2007 hangs on startup while connecting to printer

I have Word 2007 installed on my laptop which is connected to a network printer at home. When I'm at school, obviously it can't connect to the printer, so it hangs or exits while a message displays "connecting to printer" in the lower left corner. Is there a way to prevent it from connecting to the printer at startup.
