Word 2003 - problems with bullets - automatically updates

Apr 30, 2007 4:21AM PDT

Greetings,
I'm having a problem with bullets where if i take a previously created bulleted list and attempt to move the bullets forward or backward, it updates the entire document.

I have searched this forum for similar problems and have tried all the recommended solutions (i.e. unchecking the "autoformat as you type" options under Tools|autocorrect|Autoformat as ;you type| optiosn including "define styles based on your formatting," "format beginning of list item like the one before it," etc. but am still experiencing the same problem. Advice welcome!

..."it updates the entire document" ? How did you move the bullets ?

bullets

Most of the document is in bullets. When I try to move one bullet over, it moves ALL The bullets (and i think all non-bulleted) items along with it.

I've often had the same problem in Word

and it's not just bullets but the numbering indents as well.

I've come to the conclusion that Word doesn't handle that type of formatting very well.

It's ok if you stick to what Word can do, but if you try to amend the formatting for individual lines or groups of lines, Word complains and gives up the ghost.

I usually have to re-think the way I want my document to look and work-around the problem. But it is most frustrating.

Re bullets.

Your use of bullets implied that you were making a list, e.g.
? Item one.
? Item two.
? Item three.
? Etc.,

rather than its use in seperating items, e.g.
? Item one, ? Item two, ? Item three, ? Etc.

Which use were you making bullets of ?

I am trying to duplicate the problem, but can't. There is no problem in my using Word XP in creating a bulleted list, If I attempt to move a bullet to the right, it does not move. If I try to move it to the left, it disappears when it reaches the margin, with the list item moving with it, (it is now not a "listed" item.) which I think is correct behavior.

However, if I attempt to move the bullet to the right in the second example of use, all the bullets move with the text, and if I attempt to move it to the left, it gets deleted... since it is not a "list", but a sentence.

So, what were you trying achieve ? If you were trynig to move a bulleted item in a sentence, I suggest you to use "copy and paste" - highlght what you want, hit Ctrl+C, then Del, then place the cursor to the new position and hit Ctrl+v.

Hi, thanks for your help!
I figured it out with the help of you all on online communities. Somehow the normal style had the "automatically update" box checked. Once I unchecked that my bulleted lists behaved as I wanted them to. Take care!
