That's easy: don't use a normal hyphen, use a 'hard hyphen'. Insert>Symbol and then the Special tab (might be different in 2003) lets you do it via the GUI and defines the shortcut (ctrl-shift-hyphen). Also see the Word help.
If you don't like to type this character every time, do a search and replace when you're finishing the document. Would be nice for a macro.

evertime I write a sentece and I have negative numbers at the end of the sentece it likes to split the numbers from the minus sign. It Assums the minus is a hyphon. Is there a setting I change so this groups the "hyphon" with the number. I write alot of reports and this happens several times per each document. If there is no setting perhaps i can create a macro that will scan documents for this exact combination -*
