Word 2003 - Addin doc template does not override normal.dot

System info - XP SR2, Office 2003, Dell Latitude.

Problem - addin document template doesn't supercede normal.dot.

When I place a template document (.dot) in the either the TEMPLATE folder or the STARTUP folder of Word, and checkit via Tools/Templates and Addins, the addin does not override the styles.

As I read the Word documentation, any enabled addin is supposed to have precedence over Normal.dot.

The only time I can get the desired "new" styles is to open the new template document.

I would really like to keep all of these "non-standard" styles is a document template separate from normal.dot.

Anyone have a suggestion?

To copy our master dot to normal.dot on login. This neatly sidestepped that old pesky issue of corrupted normal.dot files.

Overwriting normal.dot

Thanks, Bob. I'll keep that in mind. My current concern is for a few of the styles included in a new normal.dot. Each of our offices need to be able to use their own versions of other styles not included in my addin document template. These addin styles need to be "locked" so that they will not be overwritten, even if importing a document that was generated with style versions other than mine.

Is Word the right choice?

Word doesn't offer such a feature. Your IT staff could force this by copying in the .DOT files on login but your spec sounds like you need something with more control.

Remember these are "Personal Computers" and not restricted to such heavy control like we had in mainframe days.
