I have a pair of about 6-7 year old Cerwin Vega LS-12's running on an Onkyo TX-8211 receiver, which pushes about 75 watts RMS to each one at 4 OHMS. I live in a dorm room so frequently play loud music and videos. I have heard that these woofers often do not last much longer than they have already and want to be able to replace them as soon as they go out. The problem is that CV charges $65 plus S&H for each woofer rebuild/replacing. Thats not in my budget. Would there be any chance that there is a quality woofer replacement for about 50$ a piece? A friend considered a car-type cubwoofer, since you can get a decently high powered rating woofer for about 50 bucks. I was worried about finding one that would move enough air with similar power ratings and frequency response, so kind of disregarded that option. I also know that radio shack sells pioneer replacement woofers, but haven't seen them, know anything about them, or if anyone carries them. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated since I am on a tight college budget.
