General discussion

wont start after xp upgrades.

Nov 18, 2013 6:36AM PST

I have a Sony VAIO desktop computer. After installing the latest and probably the last windows updates, it said you must restart your computer like it always says. I hit restart and the computer now will not start. It keeps trying over and over on its own. I can do a recovery but it will delete everything I have on the hard drive...sadly I never backed up anything...a mistake I won't do again. Can anybody help me??? Thank you

I can't get passed the start up screen. It just tries to boot but then shuts down and starts the process all over. I can't get to bios sadly.

You can save your files.

Over in the CNET Storage forum we list using any of the free Live CDs. I use any of the Linux ones (example at http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm ) and today's versions are easier.

There's also HIRENS which has a time limited XP on it that some cling to.

I can't see what the screen is showing but unless some deep damage was done, you can get your files out.
