Question

Won't Install Updates

Feb 7, 2012 4:00AM PST

After I say ok to upload a pending update, Microsoft says something like, "Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2656353) cannot be downloaded." When I go to shut down my computer, Microsoft say something like "Install updates and shutdown. If I say yes, the next evening at shutdown time I still get the same "Install updates and shutdown" message. How do I get rid of that message? Thanks.

Re: can't install an update

The easy way out: in IE Tools>Windows Update, find updates and mark this one as "skip". It won't be downloaded anymore.

More difficult: uninstall .Net 1.1 from Control Panel. If it turns out you need it, install a higher version from download.microsoft.com.

Still can't fix it
Feb 7, 2012 9:54PM PST

Thanks, Kees, but I find nothing that says "Skip" in IE. Then when I try to remove NET Framework 1.1 SP 1 using ADD/Remove programs, I get "Internal error 2705. Directory."

Re: skip update

My fault, I used the wrong term. It's "hide", not "skip".
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff382716.aspx tells the details.

It might be that the reason it won't update is related to the reason it can't be uninstalled. I would only start caring about it if you need that version of the .Net framework. Not many do.

To Remove NET Framework...
Feb 8, 2012 12:59AM PST

Many have the same issue you're experiencing. If you don't have any programming which requires NET Framework, you can remove it entirely using the free program below. It will remove all versions of NET Framework, including 1.1 SP1, after which you can leave your computer void of NET, or reinstall each version back from scratch.:

Hope this helps.
