Won't detect modem

Apr 10, 2005 8:58AM PDT

Hi, my Windows 98 refuses to detect my modem. Modems doesn't appear under Device Manager. When I installed an unknown device to the computer, the icon showed up with the name of my modem. I've been in contact numerous times with HP support, and have been given drivers. I get errors one way or the other, so I guess I'm basically asking if anyone knows how to install a modem from scratch. The modem worked a year ago before I got a cable modem, so I have no clue what could be going wrong.

OS is '98, Presario 5050

The first question is...
Apr 10, 2005 9:05AM PDT

What is the make and model of this modem?

Just so we are clear on one item, Windows 98 does not know many modems. You get to install the driver and then, maybe it will show up. Sometimes a motherboard driver package is required too but your post is light on detail so I have to ask you to check that out too.

Conexant

Conexant V90 56k DataFax PCI Modem

That shows up on the list of modems if you choose to select from a list, but the drivers still won't work. I've tried 2 different drivers, one giving me a LaunchApp error saying it cannot find the file specified c:\windows\system\infunist.exe. I downloaded infunist.exe but that doesn't seem to fix anything. All it does it ask if I want to uninstall things.

The other driver I tried said it could not find the device type MODEM.

That narrow it down to a few hundred models.

Conexant did not produce modems, just the chipsets and some reference drivers. Also a recent machine had Windows 98 and got that error. A little digging found the driver was only for 98se.

Rockwell

Rockwell is probably what you're asking for then. I seriously don't think I'm lacking the drivers. I think I'm lacking the knowledge on simply how to manually install a modem. I'm used to having the computer do everything for me, lol. I guess I was hoping I could get a Start-Run code that will magically fix everything, but I doubt that's gonna be the case.

But yeah, Rockwell has been mentioned by the techs along with Conexant.

Rockwell narrows it down to some thousand models.

And ... Rockwell never made a modem for sale. Just the chips and example drivers.

Given the price of a new modem (5 to 20 bucks) my guess is since you don't know the make and model you'll end up buying a modem.

Any way to know?

I can ask a tech from Presario exactly which make and model came with the modem. All I know now is HCF V90 56K PCI Modem, associated with both Rockwell and Conexant.

I take it this isn't anything a little tinkering here and there will fix. :-/

That's a great clue.

Please try to make such known in your posts along with what's in the forum tip in the future. I see your other discussion has a link to the possible HP driver.
