WMPNETWK.EXE keeps freezing my laptop

Nov 16, 2010 6:12PM PST

Hi all again. Having thought I had resolved my laptop with my RAM stuck on 95% after a few minutes, I now notice that when my Laptop freezes, the task manager shows that the process wmpnetwk.exe is running at around the 1.8gb - 2.4gb. I end the process and the laptop starts back up again, but after a few minutes, the process switches itself back on and the laptop freezes again. As a reminder, I am running Windows 7, have a 320gb hard drive and 3gb RAM. The problem looks like it is Windows Media but I cannot remove it as it is part of the Windows operating system. My laptop is a HP DV6-2020SA. Any advice would be greatful.

Windows Media Player Network Sharing
Nov 16, 2010 8:05PM PST

wmpnetwk.exe is a process of Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.

The only reports I had seen of this using resources is with Win 7 RTM where Microsoft knew there was a bug, but said it would be fixed in the retail release of Win 7. However I do now see other reports about it.

If you don't share or stream media files over a network, or you use a 3rd party media player like VLC or similar, then you likely don't need this service running and you can Stop then Disable it in the Services Console. Just head over to Administrative Tools in the Control Panel, then Computer Management > Services and Applications > Services, scroll down until you see "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service", highlight, double click, then Stop, then Disable it. Similar problem for my Toshiba Satellite A505 Window 7

I tried to delete the service as suggested. It stopped near the end of the process and said the service cannot be deleted. Error 1053. Suggestions? Besides "my a Mac".
