WMP9 won't open have tried several fixes

OK... I am trying to run Windows media player 9 on Win XP for home. It looks like I am encountering a common problem- the blasted thing won't open.

I can get a cd to play and every once in a while the help window opens up telling me how to put controls on the taskbar & I can do that. When I insert a DVD I can get a teeny little box above the taskbar control that shows the movie. But I can't expand it.

Here's what I have tried so far to fix this issue:

-removed wmp9 from windows components & reinstalled it (several times and after running pest scans also)
-Updated windows
-updated drivers
-ran both pest patrol & ad-aware (both updated today)
-Tried a system restore (a couple of times)
-restarted the ^&*%%( computer more times than I can count.
-Searched everywhere for help on this issue

Please can someone help??? What else can I try?

Look up IEFIX. I'm using it much like aspirin for many small ills. Have your OS CD handy and try that.

Excuse me? I'm watching 'Master & Commander'

right now on WMP 9. I don't understand the comment that it won't play DVDs. I'm running Win XP Pro. My daughter is running XP Home, and loves watching DVDs on her machine.

Have you downloaded the latest WMP? Could there be a problem with your graphics or sound systems? Is it a commercial DVD as opposed to a copied one?

Yes. If you install a DVD software player, SOME will enable WMP 9 to play DVDs. But as supplied from Microsoft, WMP 9 will not play commercial DVDs.

Please try to help the poster about this.

Sorry, but I just reinstalled Windows from scratch.

There is no other DVD player on the system.

Could you explain how they 'help'? Do they supply codecs that Windows doesn't have? An explanation might help us understand what the poster's problem is, and educate us in the future.

It looks like the missing piece is an Mpeg 2 decoder.

Did your DVD or PC come with an application or driver CD that has not been reapplied?
