WMP woes with external harddrive - help?

by scottrhude / September 30, 2005 1:58 AM PDT

Lads,
Just bought an external hard drive to lighten the load on my laptop and thought I'd tidy things up by moving all my MP3's (ripped to "My Music" folder using WMP) onto it. But when I opened WMP and looked in my Library all my tunes were missing! Panicking, I immediately moved them all back and like magic they started to appear again in my library! Is there any way I can get WMP to look in the external HD rather than the laptop's to organize and play my music files? Cheers!

I don't use WMP. I found it too unreliable and at time scary as it would lose content.

Consider a safer system next time.

The library is just a list of files, (mp3's in your case), that WMP has played in the past. When you open WMP it checks to see if the mp3's are still in the same location.

As you had moved the files to the external hard drive, the locations had moved, so the library came up empty.

All you have to do if you transfer the mp3 files back to the external hd is to open WMP, goto File > Open and navigate to your new drive, and all the mp3's will be there.

You can build up a new library like that.
