WMP update crippled computer

Feb 22, 2004 6:21AM PST

Win98SE on a Compaq 5842 computer. 500Mhtz Celeron processor, 256K ram.
My grandson recently tried to update WMP. He said that the update was for WIN98, can't verify that, but after checking out the Windows site, there is one available for WIN98.
So, after install, it said to reboot. He did, and is now stuck in Safe mode.
Since they are out of state I can't get my hands on it to try to undo things.
Just wondered if anyone else might have run into this problem, and might have a "simple" solution?

My quick solution would be to uninstall WMP in safemode then restart the computer. If that dont work you should move your important data off the computer and buy windows XP home, much better then 98, but if you must live with 98, you need to unistall windows componets, you can do that off the cd or Add/Remove programs.

hope this helps

And if that does not work for win98, 1 of the great things in 98 was you could reinstall over the OS and sometimes it would repair anything that may have been corrupt...better known as Repair option in Win2k/XP.

Ray, What Type Of Update??

There was a recent Critical "Security Update 828026" that was published through Windows Update. Is that the one? If so, then it wasn't specifically listed for Windows 98. If it was partially installed, it might be available for uninstall through the "Add/Remove Programs" section of Control Panel.

Or did the grandson install the newest version of Windows Media Player which would be Media Player 9? Which version did the computer have previously? Version 6.4 only? Version 7.1? As mentioned before, uninstalling the new version, such as WMP 9, then reinstalling WMP 7.1 might get the problem fixed.

Check out some of the options:

Hope this helps.
