General discussion

WMA11B

Aug 1, 2004 3:56PM PDT

I purchased the Linksys media adapter several months ago and have been very happy with it up until last month.

Suddenly it seems to ignoring any new photos I add to the Media folder taken with my Canoon A80. I have tried all the obvious stuff like re-installs etc. The only sympton is the new directories do not contain _msl.db files like the others. My understanding is the software uses some .Net feature to catalog the music/photos.

Can anyone help me to debug this issue?

Linksys support sucks as the on line chat people know nothing and they do not return support emails.

I'll blow on this one too since I can only guess since I don't have this model.

My guess is the usual. A firewall could interfere with this one. And to make it more fun, ZoneAlarm when disabled still works and blocks ports.

Linksys won't provide ZA support so owners may think them idiots?

What makes you think I have ZoneAlarm installed? Also I have no issues with the WMA11B talking to the server over the local network just it refuses to pick up new photos. Personally I think the .Net software the media folder manager is using has issues.

"Linksys won't provide ZA support so owners may think them idiots?"

I think they are idiots for suggesting the obvious stuff several times after I said I have tried it and not returning my follow up emails. If you look on Amazons reviews a lot of people have had sucky response for their support.

I can't know your setup. I, as others will have to do is repeat the usual over and over since there is no history with you and your issue.

I also won't know if you did something like pile many thousand pictures into a folder. Some of these devices will only read a directory so deep.

"idiots for suggesting the obvious stuff several times after I said I have tried "

Sorry. I'm the idiot too since I don't have this model and I have nothing more that what's in your posts to work with. What I have going for me is that I might see something from a new perspective.

Let's get this clear. It's you and me poking at it to see if there is a fix. These forums are not about you asking for an answer and getting it the first time. We are the team. I hope you understand.

I appreciate you do not know my setup. I come across fustrated in this issue it because I am.

I think the core thing to look at here is the missing _msl.db files. This to me would seem to indicate issues with the software cataloging new (As of June 1st) images from my camera.

From what a can piece together from the internet and what people have been kind to post to my blog this seems quite a common issue. It would seem that the media software you run on the server that catalog's the mp3's/images is very flakey. People complain it will fall over certain mp3s as well for no reason.

For me the specific issue is the catalog software seems no longer to like the photos taken with my Canon A80 since June 1st. I have tried removing all other mp3/images and just working with a few of the new images but no lucl. The result seems to be the same. jpg Images before the June 1st date seem to be able to be added or removed with no issue other past that date are ignored. I tested pictures from a friends Canon G3 cameras taken a few days ago and they seem to work ok.

Since the software seems to report no errors I am at a loss on how to proceed and I do not know it or .Net that well. The bottom line for me is it would seem that the software thinks these new jpg images are corrupted. However they seem in all apsects to be fine and work with other applications.

The MP3 issue.
Aug 3, 2004 9:31PM PDT

That one I run into a lot. The MP3 players are not too forgiving about some high rate MP3s or ones that play fine in, say "Winamp", but fail in this device. I can't fix it, but I know the issue. It has to do with error recovery or MP3 capability of the player.

As you may know, some MP3 encoders show you from 48 kilobit per second to 320 kbps or other ranges. If I find the failing MP3, I usually nail the issue by looking at the bitrate. The software AUDACITY comes in handy to fix that one.

Hope that helps you in that issue.

--------------------------------

Those missing files. I haven't visited your blog yet, but in this discussion I see only partial informaton about the missing file names and no complete "error message" in quoted format. You can ignore that convention if you want, but in these plain text forums it's the way we convey what we write from the error messages.

These error messages are pure gold when sniffing for a bug or fix.

Hope this helps,

Bob

I don't have an issue with my MP3s but a few other people who have posted on my blog do so I will pass on the info. As mentioned my issue is with new jpegs taken from my Canon A80.

The reason I don't give an error message is as I pointed out in my previous message the cataloging software does not give any indication of what is wrong with these jpegs. No error messages or any kind of log file that I can find. It just craps out. I agree an error message or log file from this software would be golden place to start. The only symptom is the lack of an _msl.db file in the new directories. The the software seems to place in directories where jpegs do get cataloged correctly.

TASKLIST
Aug 4, 2004 2:53AM PDT

It might be interesting to see the output of TASKLIST. Too often I find ZoneAlarm or some other firewall is interferring. Numerous posts abound about this issue. The output of TASKLIST may find something of interest.

And if you think ZA is not the issue because it worked before, updates happen all the time.

Re: WMA11B- Only from what I've read....

I've been looking at tons of different routers lately, and vaguely recall some issues with this particular model. One possible fix is to go into: in your RUN box, type services.msc (I'm assuming you have XP), then enter key. In Services, you should see the management software...then from there...sorry, but I don't have a photographic memory...but you have to play with the settings; but the key thing I remember is going into Services, then fiddling with the management software. Hope this points you in the right direction.
