I remember an article from a few years back predicting that humans would be extinct within the next 100 years. Looking at population growth charts could add credence to that notion unless something drastic should happen soon. Perhaps war and disease has helped keep our population in check. The described "long peace" has also been a period of an excelloration in our already exponential population growth. I've joked that what we need is a lottery system that gives some people bows and arrows and others shirts with targets on them. I'm beginning to wonder if the 100 year estimate isn't looking a bit optimistic right now.
I think it's more likely the next big loss of human life on earth will be due to some worldwide disease outbreak.
