Wirelss Help! Looking for a way to get a stronger signal.

Hi There
I live in a place which provides free wireless internet. The only place I can get it in my apartment is in the bathroom (!).
Any suggestions on how I can strengthen the signal...preferably without cost. ie: can I change the settings on my laptop at all to make it more receptive to the signal? I have a dell...and it has windows vista.

Would purchasing something like a d-link even be beneficial?
Im not really computer savy..so if someone could help. I would be entirely greatful!

Thanks soooo much in advance!!!
K
