Wireless WEP Key Problem

Sep 12, 2007 1:34AM PDT

So I just installed Vista Ultimate on my computer and everything went pretty smoothly except for connecting to my wireless DSL router. For some reason, every time I restart Vista I can't connect to my wireless router, it has some message like it wasn't able to Identify the router. The only way I can find to fix this is to go into my wireless settings and re-enter the WEP Key for my wireless network.

Does anyone know why this is? It should always be using the same WEP Key right? It's a real pain have to go punch in the WEP Key every time I restart the computer.

Two things...

Does it recognize the router when the security is turned off?

If your router supports WPA, it's a much better choice for security. Also, WPA passwords are a phase rather than random letters and numbers. Much easier to enter than WEP passwords (especially 128bit variety) with 26 characters to type.

Any phase will work. For example, "billclinton" or it can be a complete sentence.

I can cause this to happen on some machines by disabling SSID broadcast in the router. So my advice is to leave it enabled (since you will have no luck in getting the driver fixed) and to move to WPA for security.
