wireless vs hardwired

Sep 12, 2004 11:31PM PDT

Seems like everything is going to wireless.

If you are using a single desktop computer, no networking, don't ever move computer, ... what is value of going wireless compared to hardwired componants?

Can't people cruise by your house and pick up your wireless computer usage? If so, it would seem that you are exposing yourself unnecessarily???

Thanks

Ben

The wireless advantage is ... less wires.

But you are right. The stock setups are not secure. And even if you secure the setups, legislation forbids airtight security. That's a problem I've yet to see addressed.

Even with current security settings, I can supply a boot CD that will crack your security settings given enough time. So stay wired if you can.

Thanks Bob,

It is getting harder to find wired componants, seems like they are trying to phase them out, based on the ads in the Sunday paper.

Here's the deal...

You may be thinking of the Wifi router. Here's why. With mass production costs being what they are, it's possible a wifi router could be cheaper to produce if I just made those and dropped the wired router. Since it's just a software configuration to disable the wireless, then the unit is the same at the end of the day.

Also, my company would benefit from one less device to maintain firmware for, less support pages for that wired unit and so on.

But wired network components are plentiful and cheap. I see hundreds of PCI network cards and more at officemax, staples, bestbuy, walmart, compgeeks.com, newegg.com and so on.

This is one device that's not going away.

I don't quite understand the question. What type of wireless components is bentley speaking of wireless networking is for hooking up other pc's and devices right? So what type of wirelss components would you use that could become a "security risk" where people could drive by adnd pick up your wireless computer usage? Thanks for your help.
