Question

Wireless TV and Comcast vs AT&T - Need Info

Mar 5, 2016 11:04AM PST

Hello,
My husband and I are not tech savvy at all and need some advice. We're moving to a new place and will be putting a new 60-65"
wireless TV (not purchased yet) in the living room above our new fireplace. We do not want a cable box near the TV/fireplace for aesthetic reasons. We also want to be able to view Netflix on the TV (we use Chromecast right now to stream on our current HD non-wireless enabled TV) and I believe some of the new wireless TVs have that built in.

We called Comcast and the rep said we would need to put the cable box by the fireplace, as in mandatory. Is this true? The previous owners we're buying from didn't have a cable box. What he said was "Comcast does not have wireless cable boxes." Which is fine...but is there no other workaround? We are ok with putting the cable box in an upstairs den...would we have problems with that when viewing TV ?

We have AT&T now and it seems like they do have wireless cable...but again, same question...would we have an issue if we placed the box upstairs instead?

We were hoping to get comcast because I have an old Tivo that I want to hook up to it. If Tivo would mess anything up or is not needed, we don't need to use it. I prefer its ease of use to the AT&T DVR.

All of this is very confusing so any light you can shed would be appreciated. Here are the questions:

--Is it accurate that if we get Comcast, we MUST put the box by the fireplace?

--How can we get cable TV onto the wireless TV without wires, cable box etc in the area? (It would ruin the look)

--Any suggestions for best wireless TV?

--Again, we can put our current HDTV which is not that old, on the second floor den with a cable box. We prefer Comcast. Is there a way? What do we need to do?

Thanks!

Answer
This is where you get a contractor to do something.

I've seen such where the contractor puts a area in the wall to hold those boxes. There is really no such thing as a wireless TV yet. You have power and if cable, even the boxes that are wireless need power and a video cable to the TV.

So get a contractor to make what you want happen.

Answer
Old Tivo likely wont work w/ comcast

I prefer comcast X1 vs ATT, at least around the greater Chicago area. Where ATT offers fiberoptic service direct to the residence, such as in parts if CA, might be preferable.

Just hide the box and run the cable behind a nearby wall. Pretty standard install for newer homes.

Tip: have your installer run an ethernet cable directly to your Tv and skip wireless for netflix. Much more reliable for Netflix. Again, wires can be hidden easily.
