Question

Wireless Routers

Jan 10, 2012 3:56AM PST

I have used one for a while without understanding all of the tech babble that comes with one. Now, lately my broadband internet connection has been horrible, and every time i call the broadband company, they basically say it is the router that is causing the problems. I have had this router and new computer since October and had no issues, just in the pasty few weeks. So i guess my question is if a router causes broadband issues, how do so many people use them??? Is there something i am missing here?? Does a $100 router make a difference compared to a $50 router?? Help...

Answer
I find the settings matter more than the router.

Unless the router is indeed failing or the owner didn't listen to advice and stuck it in the basement the usual setup advice in the CNET Networking Forum is all I ever needed.

If it's a separate router, try without it: connect your PC directly to the modem (wired)..
If it's a combined modem/router, try if wired is better than wireless.
