Wireless optical mouse is preventing the screen saver

Jan 25, 2006 8:10PM PST

I have a philips x50 notebook with windows XP professional. I have bought a wireless optical mouse (microsoft Wireless Optical Notebook mouse 4000)
When the mouse is plugged in, the screen saver will not start even if idle for long enough, despite being configured to do so. When the mouse is not plugged in the screen saver starts as normal. Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions?

Many thanks
Carl

driver

Carl - I would go to the MS site and look for the latest driver. It may solve this problem and prevent others that have not been in evidence yet. Amos.

I've installed the new driver and it seems to have done the trick.
Thanks for your help

Did you try NO DRIVER?

I routinely remove the drivers that came with such mice and use whatever Windows supplies. Sure I lose the eye candy or tilt a wheel feature...

im running vista and have no clue how to remove that driver. how would i do it?

You would not remove Vista's driver.

And if you didn't install or use the CD that came with that mouse then there is nothing more to do here.

Flip It
Jan 26, 2006 2:04PM PST

if you got speakers on your desk or a subwoofer like me and play music all the time then the vibrations are what the mouse is picking up.

Solution: Flip the mouse upside down if there's no surface then the optical mouse is powerless

Im using Wireless set as well and experiencing identical problem... but have no solution (I was looking for solution when i run into your post).

When mouse and/or keyboard are plugged in, neither screen saver nor auto power off works. unplug the receiver module and it works fine.

Should have known better... Stay away from Microsoft $#!t....

Carl,

I have the same mouse on my Dell and have the same problem. I was told the same thing about updating the driver, but can't find it anywhere.

Thanks,

Where to get driver
Jun 3, 2012 8:07AM PDT

Just to make sure someone knows about my battle with the screensaver not starting when I hooked up a Logitech M515 optical mouse on an Inspirion 8500 (2002 vintage) running Windows 2000Pro w/service pack 4. Tried numerous fixes found online. None worked until I found the Logitech forum. SetPoint 3.1.116, found on the logitech site, corrected the "Optical Mouse Not Allowing The Screensaver To Start" problem immediately.

The mouse tilt wheel function also works fine with this old driver.

This driver is generic enough to work with just about any mouse. The driver is listed as being for Windows 2000 and XP.

Hope this helps someone who has spent as much time as I have trying to keep the mouse and have the screensaver work.

Now, a question for Logitech. Why does this driver work fine, but 6.X driver does nothing for the problem. Maybe someone should look at this driver and find out what was screwed up in the new drivers.

NAH, that would make too much sense.

I have the bad answer.

It's pretty simple. It's getting very hard to find driver developers for XP as well as the system, compilers and more to do the work.

This seems to elude users today.
