Question

Wireless Network Issues? Edit

Oct 3, 2016 4:49AM PDT

I have been having issues with my wireless network for a month now. My internet dl speed drops to an unusable speed (single digits) at various times. It affects all devices. The problem does not exist if connected directly to the modem.

When the dl speed drops, the ds light on the modem switches between orange and green. It is usually (when working properly) just orange.

I went through troubleshooting with the router manufacturer for my 3 month old router. Nothing helped so they deemed it defective & sent me a new one. The issue persisted with the new one as well.

I took the router to a friend's house (who is out of town) for a day & a half and hooked it up to their modem (they have a different brand/model but same ISP). The times I stopped over to use/check it, it was fine.

I brought the router home, hooked it up & it worked all last night, but this morning the dl speed was below 1Mbps. I tried various channels, all the same. Back at square one.

I've been in contact with support for my ISP, they insist it is not the modem as they remote pinged it & whatnot.

I have not bought any new electronics in months & there are not an excess of networks in my neighborhood (I can see them in my available wifi & in the app I downloaded to see what channels are being used by them).

Any ideas?

Modem: Ubee U10C035 (ISP owned, had since Aug. 2013)
Router: Linksys E1200 N300 (mine, about 2.5 weeks old) (2.4GHz only)

So what worked since Aug 2013?

Maybe you need to get another of the things that worked?

router change

I had a netgear wireless router before, however, that quit working & I replaced it with the linksys router. The first one worked for nearly 3 months, the new router replacement they sent me is less than a month old and had the same issues from the start.

So this doesn't work.

I'm not there to tinker with settings so your best move is to go back to a model that works.

Now there is a new thing with new routers. Many have a firewall and there are long drawn out discussions about that. I can't know your needs so adjust as required. Also try the routers latest firmware.

But to me at this point you replace this with a working model.

firmware is up to date. I updated the other model & the replacement came already updated. this router did work for nearly 3 months when I first got the first model.

modem hates router?

Also, the router seemed to work fine at someone else's house. They have the same ISP as I do, but a different modem.

Answer
I suspect you are getting blacklisted
Oct 3, 2016 8:23PM PDT

You been doing something that would get you on a blacklist that would cause your IP address to be blocked? I would have thought you had electrical problems, but then you said taken to another home it works OK. After two router problems, must try a new modem, unless it's all combined like most ISP supply today.

eh

I don't think I have done anything I shouldn't be. I haven't downloaded anything illegally. Direct connection to my modem works, just wifi is jacked.
