Wireless Netgear router with cable modum

Sep 6, 2005 2:27AM PDT

I know this sounds like a hardware problem but I've tried everythiong but stand on my head. I, myseelf, have three computers networked, no problem, they all speak to each other. I'm trying to set up a friend with two computers. One is a Gateway runnin MN 2000. The other is a new Dell laptop with WIN XP. The MN is already on cable which runs fine. No matter what I do, I can't get a signal to the laptop. It's even picking up very weak signal from a neighbor!! When I wire everything up following the instructions provided, the cable modum won't work on that one WIN 2000) either. I've taken the laptop to the same room and still nothing.

I'm probably missing some simple issue here but when I wired my own, it immediately recognized the internet signal. If I can get that, I shouldn't have any problem with fixing her up with a networking system.

I'm desperate and so is she.

A little confusion.....
Sep 6, 2005 2:48AM PDT

is reigning in that I cannot pick out who's Internet is not working, what type of wireless device (router?) is being used, and whether you are using Windows Millenium or 2000?

Assuming you are using a router in your neighbors house, can you access that router's setup program through it's web-based interface?

If so, is wireless broadcasting enabled?

A list of the hardware being used will help sort this.

the hardware

Sorry, I thought I'd made it clearer. This is for a friend who does not live in this block and so I can't really try any recommendations until I go to her place.

She has a Comcast Cable Modum.

Netgear router with her 'main' Gateway Computer
running WIN MN 2000 (That's what it says at start-up) This works fine until I attach the router to the modem, to the computerfor a wireless network to her Laptop, Dell Dimension that has an already included Dell network card.

When I hook everything up, nothing works!

On the laptop, I can find a neighbors network access which isn't strong enough to use in any way.

That's about as much as I know. I don't understand 'web-based interface. Anyway, I can't get on the internet when it's all hooked and therefore can't change anything.

Hope this helps you to understand
Thanks, Valerie

Ahhh, the fog is lifting.....

When you disconnected her cable modem from her PC and reconnected it to her router, did you cycle the power to all devices? I.E. did you turn everything off and then back in this order >>> modem / router/ PC's?

The modem needs to report the router's MAC address back home before it will renew any IP's.

I thought so but...............

I thought I had done that but I'll try it again. I guess BOTH computers need to be turned off when this is done??

Thanks Michael. I'll be back no matter what happens. It'll be a couple of days before I can get over there to try it.

For Michael geist
Sep 9, 2005 10:18AM PDT

Hi Michael,

It's me again. Maybe you can read what led up to this, because I need further help than that. I thank you for your suggestions and so far, I have managed to connect the modem and router. I now have the guest PC (a Dell laptop, running WINXP) connected to the router and on line. Trouble is, the Host computer (A gateway running WIN MN) now freezes up when I try to do anything with that. Any suggestions?

I AM SO FRUSTRATED!
I shall be looking for your suggestions.

Thanks, Val

Just to clear the air....

1) Why do you refer to the Gateway as a host? This term is used when a network works through this PC for it's Internet connection. Using a router would negate this host status and give you a peer to peer network where each PC has equal status.

2) Your Millenium PC is freezing when you try to do what? You may have a lingering viral/spyware infection. Try another PC on the network to see if the connection will work.

No Spyware

I don't think so Michael. This computer has all the protection you can think of and has been regularly updated and scanned.

I guess I misunderstood the 'gateway' idea. I meant, by 'host' computer, the desktop running MN, which has the router and modem attached to it. It worked fine with just cable and now that I've been successful with connecting the laptop through the router, the desktop freezes as soon as I try to get on the Internet (or anything else). Also, it won't open any desktop icons when I click on them.

Another problem I'm having, is trying to configure OE on the laptop. I've used the exact same configuration as mine which works!

It seems I take five steps forward and three back Sad

My son-in-law suggested it might be lack of rqm. What do you think?

''the desktop freezes as soon as I try to get on the Internet (or anything else). Also, it won't open any desktop icons when I click on them.''

indicate to me that you have problems with the PC in question. If you disconnect the cable (what kind of cable are you using to the router?), does the PC return to normal (desktop icons work)?

Windows Millenium (what you incorrectly call 2000, just adds to the confusion), is a buggy version which for good reason was discontinued. I might back up my files and reinstall the OS or upgrade to XP if the hardware permits.

The amount of RAM you are using (you have not revealed this) if insufficient, can slow things down. But does not cause lockups unless something else is awry.

"Another problem I'm having, is trying to configure OE on the laptop. I've used the exact same configuration as mine which works!"

Setting up OE is little more than:

1) providing a user name and password for the account
2) providing the incoming and outgoing mail servers

Where are you getting stuck?

I know it sounds odd!

I did mention that when the router is NOT attached,, everything works fine between the computer and cable modem.

The Windows MN., is six years old. Do you think it could be updated to WIN XP?

I have done everything just as you said to configure OE on the laptop. It's set the very same way mine is (except for one small detail which I'll change when I go to my friends place. That is the incoming mail server, I have the wole name and email address rather than just the name. Doesn't seem like that should so much difference.

Thanks for your support, I'll check back.

I'll try that!
Sep 10, 2005 5:40AM PDT

The update advisor looks interesting. I'll have to check out her computer when I go there.

As for the cable. I have the modem cable plugged into the WAN port of the router. I have a blue ethernet cable between the PC and the router port 1 (I've tried others). All the right lights are lit on the modem and the router. The laptop works like a dream but the desktop freezes when I try to get online. I keep repeating this in order to help you understand. I can't do anything else until Monday when I go to see my friend, the troublesome computer owner!

Thanks again. Val

Router and Modem in single pc?
Sep 10, 2005 5:46AM PDT

Your connection is: Modem >> PC >> Router >> PCs

Why you did that? Any reason?

Regular connection is:

Modem ->> Router -->> PCs

That's right

I didn't explain myself very well. The instructions were explicit and I did it in the order you mentioned.
