Resolved Question

Wireless Laptop w/Domain vs Wireless M110 Projector

Jun 13, 2012 11:54PM PDT

Problem:
Have a Laptop connecting to a Wireless network with domain login.

Need to also attach to a Wireless Dongle on a M110 Projector at the same time.

How can I do this if you can only connect to a single WiFi connection?

We could get Internet access through the projector, but we need to be connected to our domain to view our reports.

Thanks for any insight you may have!

This is more of an IT challenge than anything else.

Your IT staff needs to allow this device on your network and then you can connect to this over your network. This is a bit advanced so if your IT staff is challenged (most are) then forget the wireless and use the HDMI connection.

Thanks for the tip. Do you happen....

Thanks for the tip.
Do you happen to have a link or steps to this challenge?

Thanks!

As I have used so many projectors.

I continue to use the HDMI connections.

If your IT staff is challenged you take steps to the HR office. I've done that too many times over the years since while I'm adept at such things, it distracts me from my work if I have to do IT's work too. That means I demand the IT staff step up or step out.

I don't quite understand your answer, but this isn't what I was looking for.

Thanks anyways.

Your IT to step in and set it up. If they fail to do their job, you ask their supervisor to find folk that can do the work.

If the IT can't do the work you follow your chain of command up until the IT department is fixed.

If you cant help me, please let me know and I won't waste any more of your time.

Then let's use what we have?

Since the wireless is that protected is it allowable to create a wifi system just for this system?

That is, I could put a wifi router in that room and have the laptop and projector on that wireless LAN.

Solved for about 20 to 50 bucks.

It's a shame I didn't know what you shared up front. I still think a small business needs to think about their IT needs and hire accordingly. It's rough but at least I can solve this with a 20 buck box.

I see the workarounds are already given. But I wonder
Jun 19, 2012 6:45AM PDT

The video cable from laptop to display is the simplest solution. I use that weekly it seems.

But I'm left to wonder if you were thinking this projector could display without using a laptop or PC?

I looked over the docs at Dell and found no support for a domain login. I can explain why in a nutshell. Such logins require not only a Microsoft CAL (a license to access) but can result in patent issues and license issues. So it looks like no projector will do such a login.

Use the laptop to drive the display and it will be fine. The projector should be able to obtain an IP just fine.

Found a solution.

This answer to my inquiry from Planet WiFi worked like a charm.
Hope this helps if someone else asks you this question!

By the way, the projector is ceiling mount, so no cable. That's why I purchased the Dongle.

-------------------------------------

The Wireless principle is to put a second Wireless card on the laptop (like a USB Wireless.

Use this free software to turn the second card to an Access Point and connect the Wireless projector to it.

If it needed network integration or Network policy to allow an additional installation to the main network you have to talk to whoever is in charge of it.

Microsoft, MVP - Networking.

Nice solution.

Thanks for that.

Sorry but when folk post it's a business I always defer to the company's IT department as it is their job to make it happen. As I have other things to do at the office, when the IT staff is not doing their job, I push them to get with the program.

Answer
Work-around then.
Jun 19, 2012 6:27AM PDT

- Connect the laptop via a wired connection (Ethernet cable).
- Use a projector with HDMI or VGA input (depending on your laptops outputs)
- Download the reports you want to show to your hard disk (should work even if browser based)
- Copy the reports into a nice Powerpoint presentation.
- Print the reports and blame the IT for their incompetence. If the reports are good and the presentation is good, the audience won't mind, might even agree.

Now let's assume the IT staff placed this wireless-only projector in a wireless-only room. Wouldn't be too smart if they wouldn't have a solution for any of their users. So maybe they do have a solution. Did you ask the helpdesk already?
