Dear hooksme,

Do you have a modem? A box that comes with your internet server?

Do you have a wireless adapter, which connects to the modem?

no--we do NOT have a modem---we connect to the internet thru a "hotspot"---a direct line of sight---we DO have a VONAGE phone adapter

Dear hooksmee,

If you have a hotspot modem/box, then your vonage phone adapter should plug into that via ethernet. If you don't, you need a wireless adapter such as the one in your laptop, but for ethernet. The wireless adapter should plug into your WAN port on the VONAGE adapter.

I'm not sure if the VONAGE adapter has a usb port, but I doubt it. If it does, you can run a usb cable from your laptop to the adapter, but then it won't work when your laptop is off...

I'm curious, how does hotspot work if you don't have some sort of modem from then in your house?

have tried and tried

have tried the VONAGE phone adapter using the ethernet cable directly in the laptop but nothing---have tried everything that we know---we have bought a WRT54GS 2.4Ghz router thinking that THAT might solve the problem but NOWHERE in the setup software is the wireless laptop scenario addressed----using VONAGE with a wireless laptop must be a VERY new situation and it seems that nobody seems to know how to set it up----i DO know that VONAGE is coming out with a VOiP phone this summer to eliminate all of these problems but that doesn' solve the problem NOW!!

I'm trying to connect to Vonage with my laptop from a wireless hotspot like you are - exact same problem. I thought I'd search the forum to find an answer, and I found the problem listed here. I haven't been able to get it to work either. They gave me a Motorolla VT2442 router w/ phone adapter. It works great at work with a wired connection, but when I plug it into the ethernet port of my laptap and setup the usb wireless to share its internet connection, the VT2442 can't connect to the internet. I've shared the connection with other computers on the laptops ethernet, but the VT2442 doesn't seem to be able to share it. Maybe the response time is too slow so the VT2442 gives up when checking for the vonage server. I've tried static IP address, automatic with DHCP enabled, PPPoE, everything I can think of. I even bridged the connection between the wireless port and the ethernet port. I'm thinking of maybe getting the ethernet terminal adapter alone, w/o router. Anyone else have any new ideas?

Hey Hooksme,

I see that this post is over a year old. What did you do to solve your problem? Did you ever get it working?
