General discussion

wireless is connected, but no internet

Mar 1, 2005 12:30PM PST

I have an HP Pavilion zv5330us notebook with a wireless card already built in w/ winXP & service pack 2. I am in a dorm room and I can pick up several signals and connect to them. The only thing is it says it is connected with a strong signal and when I go to click on internet explorer it says working offline and unavailable. What is wrong? What should I do?

Did you find a solution? If so, what was it? I am encountering the same problem and trying to troubleshoot it but racking my brain to no end.

Computer that cannot access the Internet is running XP. I have another computer (XP) that can see, connect & get Internet connectivity w/out any problems. The issue is not sharing because I power down the other PC when troubleshooting the problem machine. Likewise, I have disabled zone alarms on the problem machine so there shouldn't be any firewall conflicts. I will worry about configuring the firewall after I get the machine on the Internet first.

Can't connect to internet

You might want to check the properties on the adapter that does not want to connect. You may have to tweak the properties to get it to talk to the access points.
Make sure you are not trying to connect to encrypted access points, without the security keys you will get signals , but no access.
Lastly, your adapter may not like the channel the access point is broadcasting on. In that case try a different adapter and see if you can connnect with the troublesome machine.

Same problem here

I'm having the same exact problems.

I have an HP DV1000, and the wireless connected to 3 different places with no problems for 1 week. After that, it connects with good signal, but no interenet access............

the message for Jupiter is correct but I would like to add if the computer is not on the MAC address list it would'nt connect. The MAC address list is simply I list of computers that can connect to that access point.

You dont belong to the wireless network

I Quote:

The only thing is it says it is connected with a strong signal and when I go to click on internet explorer it says working offline and unavailable.

Now My question are:
Do You belong to the wireless network?
Do you authorized to use the Wireless network?
Do you add the wireless network SSID and password?
