Wireless file transfers?

Hi

I am used to my wireless router at home in which I send files to friends wirelessly when they are on my laptop. I am curious however is there a way to send files wirelessly to another laptop with a wireless card without using a router? This would be very useful when on the road. Basically therefore creating a wireless point to point network where no internet access is available wirelessly.
