because the access point/router is giving you the IP..
Range expander will have difficulty in finding the AP if you disable broadcasting the SSID.
Beside the range expander (if i'm not mistaken) also have a utility to configure it...
try to open your wifi security, just for troubleshooting... and try to use mac address filtering as your security
Hello,
I have been having a hell of a time trying to set up my wireless connection to ultimately play CoH, or Asherons Call, via Linksys WRE54G. I?ve researched online for several days how to deal with this thing and found that the set up CD and quick installation guide is worth crap or even less. I seem to be getting somewhere in the process by trial and error. Here is my situation, with the reason I opted to get this expander. My dad?s laptop is in the basement and the WRT54G is connected and configured on his laptop. Now, my computer is on the 2nd floor (quite a ways away). Without the range extender (expander or whatever you want to call it), I get connection of 1 Mbps, if I pick up the signal at all. Well, after purchasing the extender, at first I couldn?t do a thing with it. The auto-configuration button would be helpful IF my Dad?s wireless network wasn?t set up with a WEP key. But no problem, I have a copy of that key, but how to get to the 192.168.1.240 page in the browser and upgrade firmware, change settings, etc? Well, I found a good how-to website here and there, and found that I had to change my IP address and subnet mask to match that of the expander. Before that, I reset the expander with a pin (its worn out by now), then finally with the matching appropriate IP and subnet mask, I can finally get into the Linksys web utility. Now, here is where I run into problems. I can change settings just fine, in fact I upgraded to the latest firmware. Then when I go to the enabling WEP box, after entering the 128 bit key, I press save. It happens always that the wireless connection becomes unavailable for a scant second then reconnects. At first I didn?t think it was a big deal, figuring I could work in the web utility with no problem, but the page immediately changes to ?this page cannot be displayed?. When I hit refresh or open a new browser to re-enter the web utility address, I get the same thing. Ultimately not being able to continue means while I have a good to very good to sometimes-excellent wireless connection, (36 Mbps-54 Mbps) I cannot connect to IE, AIM, YP, or any of the conventional devices. I did a cmd DOS nslookup of any address I could think of, and tried pinging but got 100% packet loss. I send packets fine, but don?t receive any at all. I asked the IT guy who set up the network for my dad (who is also a family friend, which is of convenience, but he is out of town for a week or two, and patient I am not, I can almost taste this connection, especially after being on a modem for the last 2 years, if nothing works, then Ill have to opt to wait until he comes back in town). I asked him if I had to set the IP in the web utility configuring it to the WRT54G router or do I have to set it up to my dad?s wireless network? His answer wasn?t much of an answer; he kind of said he would look at it when he comes back (again the patience issue). While having utmost confidence in his abilities, I think it makes sense for me to set the Linksys wireless web utility to the settings on my dad?s network, but I could be wrong. So which is it? Most of these how to guides assume that the wireless network is owned by the person inquiring and answers accordingly. Anyone have ideas (details appreciated) how I can set up a computer in a different part of the house that attains a good signal through the range expander with a computer already hooked to the wireless router? Or do I have to forego my dad?s computer altogether. Another idea I have sitting in my head (which Ill do when I get more time on the weekend), is to set up computer directly at the wireless hub and install the WRT54G software and set up the wireless network that way and then configure through the range expander. I know I?ve rambled on and on, but Ill summarize what I am asking in the next paragraph:
Basically if anyone can answer what I can do, set up my computer through my dad?s wireless IP, subnet mask, gateway and DNS? Or configure it directly with the Linksys WRT54G router? Maybe I should have said that before. Yet when the Range expander for Linksys is concerned, I surmise nothing is that simple, unfortunately. Any help will be appreciated!
