Wireless dial-up modem problems

Sep 16, 2005 2:14AM PDT

Can't get DSL so I bought a wireless Router with dial-up back-up (Netgear FWG114P) and an external serial modem from ebay (Diamond SupraExpress 56e). I run XP on the computer that is Ethernet wired to the router. I didn't know how to install the modem (through the router) and ended up telling XP to install it on "all ports". The installation was successful, though the modem shows its location as "unknown" in device manager. When I select that modem as the default and try to connect to the internet I get a modem hardware error. I didn't use the automatic setup for the router since that was geared for the DSL/Cable modem user. I did set up the Automatic Rollover section to get the router to try connecting via dial-up. I noticed that the modem was a European version. It doesn't seem to be supported by Diamond any more, so I'm not sure what to try next. Thanks, Nick.

With the FWG114P, you dont need to install the modem on your computer. All you have to do is to connect your External Serial modem to the FWG114P, go to the router setup page, look under the Auto-rollover section, input your dial-up account information. Select the correct modem model on the modem page section for the FWG114P. I believe your model is not listed on the modem page so you can try using the Standard 56000 modem. Uninstall the modem driver from your computer as you dont need it and change the internet connection setting to use "Never dial Connection". You should hear the modem dial out when you try to connect to the internet. Review the installation guide for more detail.

Still having trouble
Sep 17, 2005 2:42AM PDT

Thanks Albert. I followed your advice (though I realized that you don't use the Automatic-rollover section if you have chosen the serial port as your primary connection; all the ISP connection info gets entered in the Basic Setup section), but am still having problems. The modem dials out, seems connected for about two minutes, then hangs up and dials again. Using an unsupported modem may be a problem. I ended up selecting the Standard K56Flex modem from the list.

Another issue may be from using Mozilla Firefox as my browser. There is no place in the options menu to check ''never dial a connection''. There is, however, a ''Configure proxies to access the internet'' page which offers 3 main options: Direct Connection to the Internet; Auto-Detect Proxy Settings for this Network; and Manual Proxy Configuration. There are lots of fields to fill in if you select manual configuration. I don't know what to do on this page. I will contact Mozilla, but maybe I should just go back to IE (yuck). Netgear says they support IE and Netscape, so I thought Firefox might be included under Netscape.

The last question I have (for now!)is: Since the modem is not ''installed'', how would you control modem settings such as turning off the speaker or activating ''Modem on Hold'' through the FWG114P?

Thanks again.

I should have make it clear that the setting about "never dial a connection" is in IE internet setting. But that doesnt mean you can't use firefox. I believer once you've change that setting, it change how "Windows" connect to the internet, not just your browser. For the modem problem, I will suggest you to get one that are listed on the router. I have a Netgear FVS328(Similar device)and use a USR 56K voice Ext modem for Auto-rollover. Never have any problem with the modem connecting to the Internet when my DSL goes offline. I do notice that the router have some problems switching back to DSL from modem but I guess this issue does not apply to you.

And for controling the modem setting, I think there is none. Modem support are at very minimal with these products (just enough to get you connected).
