Wireless connection slowed down bigtime

First, the setup here :

Cable internet
3 computers. 2 wireless, 1 wired to the router, which is connected to the modem.

router is a Netgear WGR614

Worked fine with great speeds and connection the last several months, but as of two weeks ago....Out of nowhere, it seems the wireless speeds have been cut BIGTIME. Download speeds used to be around 250-350 kb/sec....Now they are around 30-50 kb/sec, consistantly....No higher. And it is not the computers because it is BOTH of the computers that are wireless. Have called the internet service provider and they say everything is fine on their end. Told me to call Netgear. I did, and they led me through the power cycling, updating the router firmware, etc....To no avail. Still have the same speeds. Have cleaned the computer completely anyway, ran numerous spyware programs, etc....Computer is clean and the signal is great to the router, the speeds, only on the wireless computers, are complete crap though. Speed tests prove it. Same thing on both. However, when I plug the one computer into the router directly with an ethernet cable, the speeds are up to what is normal again ! Then I go wireless and BAM, it's like hitting a wall. Everything slows. Downloads, web page loading, etc. Any ideas of what is wrong here ?! It's like there is limitations placed on the wireless speeds or something. HELP !!!

Did you try changing channels?

In reply to: Wireless connection slowed down bigtime

Since many routers come out of the box all set to the same channel it can get crowded as a neighbor installs theirs.

I try channels 1, 5 then 11.

Tried it

I've tried every channel from 1 through 11, and I get same results. From I get anywhere from 450 to 550 kbps. Before this problem started I used to get between 5 and 10,000 kbps!! so this is a HUGE difference. If I plug my laptop INTO the router, I get close to 20,000 kbps

My apologies...I must have skipped a few channels when I tried last time. I tried, and EVERY ONE except 5 and 2 runs crappy. Channel 5 runs at close to normal speeds !! Thank you Bob, you're a lifesaver. Every other channel at speakeasy tests at 500-550 kbps, channel 2 runs at 1,310 kbps, and 5 runs at 4,000-5,000 kbps !! But I have a question....Does it mean something is wrong that pretty much ALL the other channels run at such crappy speeds ?

Sorry. Without ...

In reply to: A-HA!

Without a few million bucks in RF site analysis I can't really tell why this is so. Blame it on the neighbors and count yourself lucky you found a hole to send your data through?
