Wireless connection between Win 7 and Win XP keeps tripping

Jan 4, 2010 11:56PM PST

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP Media Center 2005 and have just purchased a HP G61-110SA running Windows 7 Home Premium. I have actually connected them before as the Dell is connected to my school's network and I did ICS to browse on my HP.
However, I just tried to link then both(without ICS) so that I can transfer some files from the Dell to the HP but once I start transferring, the connection goes down. I don't know why. It's stable as long as I don't transfer. And it keeps referring to the network as an unidentified network (whatever that means).
Also, I can't figure out how to save the network on the HP. Because of that, anytime the connection goes off, I have to retype the password AND change the network from public to work. I thought Win 7 would give me less stress than Vista. Please help

No real details in that post to work with. No mention of the router, or if adhoc, etc.

Router?
Jan 5, 2010 2:11AM PST

I'm not using a router. It is a direct connection. I assume that is what is called adhoc. They both have wireless connections so I just created a network on the XP and then connected the Win 7 to the same network. I'm not much of a network person. Sorry.

Let's say no ICS is involved.

Adhoc

The network is adhoc. And there is no ICS involved. I'm not trying to browse with the Win 7 system. I just want to transfer some files.

Hope this helps

Without more information we cannot help much, other than just throw out suggestions...

First, make sure all your drivers are updated: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Update-drivers-recommended-links.

Check your router: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/set-up-a-wireless-router.

Set up a workgroup to network computers running different versions of Windows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Networking-home-computers-running-different-versions-of-Windows.

Then set up your Easy File Transfer to transfer files: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Transferring-files-and-settings-frequently-asked-questions.

Cheers,
Tara

More info?

I'm not sure what information you need. There is no router, this is an adhoc connection with both sytems in the same workgroup. I know that the Win XP system can see the Win 7 system beacuse I can access the folder and have actually transferred a few of the files. But the connection goes off a few minutes into the transfer. My system has downloaded and installed so many updates. it's hard to keep track of them. And I've done Easy File Transfer to transfer all my files when I first bought the system. These are just extra ones I just got that I wanted to transfer. If you could tell me what information you need, I'll try to supply it.
