Why you need more than a firewall. Symantec has yet to sell me that product (tell me what it does over a firewall.)
Frankly? Go back to what worked or talk to Symantec.
I've been having problems with my wireless connection working and then dropping out randomly. There are several possible problems I'm wondering about, and I was wondering if you could help me figure out what's going on. Here's the important info:
Lenovo ThinkPad T400 type 2764, running Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 5300
Intel(R) 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection
Ericsson F3507g Mobile Broadband Minicard Network Adatper (not in use)
Mobile Broadband Connection using RCA modem - Comcast
Router type: D-Link DIR-655, firmware version 1.21 (up to date)
I'm able to use the wired connection just fine, reliably, so I don't think it's a problem with the actual modem/ wired connection.
Here are a couple of hypotheses:
1) I'm not totally sure, but this seems to have started sometime around the time I installed Symantec Endpoint Protection. At one time I was getting notices in the Windows Network and Sharing Center saying something about security settings not matching the network adapter. Symantec EP runs something called "Proactive Threat Protection," "Network Threat Protection," and "Network Access Control" in addition to the antivirus and antispyware protection. When I turn off Proactive Threat Protection and NEtwork Threat Protection, the problem seems to be better. I also have Windows Firewall on. Could there be some problem with conflicting settings? What should I check to make sure settings are correct between Windows Firewall, Network and Sharing Center, and SEP?
2) The computer came pre-installed with a program called Thinkvantage "Access Connections." I can't tell if I should be controlling wireless settings through that program, or Network and Sharing Center, or if I can use both simultaneously. Suggestions?
3) I am sometimes using up to 4 wireless devices at the same time within about 500 square feet of the router (3 laptops plus a wireless keyboard/mouse). Could interference be a problem here?
Let me know if I left out important info that you need. Thank you so much for your help.
