Wireless Card for Windows 98 (Original Version)

Mar 15, 2004 9:07AM PST

I have a new, wireless enabled (802.11b) laptop and router. I'd like to use my old desktop as a print server, but all the wireless adapter cards I find seem to require Windows 98 SE, while my desktop is running the original Win98. Is there something not included in Win98 first edition that means I won't be able to buy a network adapter, or can someone recommend a product? The computer is a HP Pavilion from 1999.

you can't use a wireless adapter card directly on the older machine. you will have to get a wireless access point and connect it to the hub. your Win98 system will have to connect using wire to the hub.

Good luck finding what you are looking for. I'm running into the same problem. What I have discovered is that Linksys has a card that will work in your system. The wmp11 is compatable with your system, provided that you get v2.5. What I'm finding on store shelves everywhere is v4.0. This one will only work with Windows 98 SE and newer. You can tell the diference by looking at the end of the package. V2.5 will list system requirements as Windows 95 or Windows 98. If anyone knows of a retailer that carries these cards, please tell me where.
