Question

Wireless Cable Modem for Comcast

Oct 19, 2013 11:23PM PDT

Hi I am switching from DSL to Comcast internet.

They charge $7 per month to rent a wireless modem/router.
Can I purchase one from a "big box" retailer that would do the same or better job??

But since I'm not there I can't check the local stores to see if they have such. Usually you don't get WiFi in a cable modem so that's one more part. That 7 a month may be a good deal as if it fails you don't have to fix it.

Answer
You could buy a $15 WiFi router & use your own modem

For several years I used a D-Link cable modem and a Tenda WiFi router. That was before I subscribed to Comcast's phone service however. You need the Comcast box if you use their phone service. Since you didn't say what phone service you have, that's about all I can tell you.

Good luck.

Yes I am going to use their phone service also.
So I guess that means I need to stick with the $7 rental.

ask Comcast or search the net for what Comcast suggests. I purchased the Motorala model SB6121 modem and the Netgear N66 wireless router and they work great....Digger
