Wireless Atheros ar5007 driver

Apr 5, 2011 3:39AM PDT

The wireless card driver that came with Home Premium, I was told
is not compatible with the Linksys e3000 wireless n router
I just installed.

Linksys support told me to get the "latest" driver from
the Atheros people however in my googling it seems
the "latest" one is from 2007.

Has anyone encountered this same problem?

All I can get is local access ( no WAN ) under this
setup.

Thanks.

Really.

OK, there are updates to router firmware worth noting.

And we have the router settings to talk about.

And then we have the old Vista Broadcast flag to change.

And we have that old Norton issue.

But so far, without fail I have never found the issue you noted. I have found tech support to send folk on a wild goose chase when they can't cure it.

How many tech support people does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Depends.

Microsoft, Apple, or Moderators on Cnet?

Hah!
Apr 5, 2011 4:01AM PDT

Seriously, though...

Can you figure this lan only access thing?

The atheros driver is b/g only but even if it's
an n router, it should still connect ok.

Have you heard of successful connections in this example?

Sorry.

I couldn't help myself and needed time for support to arrive to help with the lightbulb change. See reply below and "Yes."

Router model, revision and firmware settings.

Keep in mind that the CNET Networking Forum sticky shows where we start for settings.

Try turning off the Vista Broadcast flag which caused old routers to lockup, reboot or crash.

Vista does not work with Wireless Router
Apr 6, 2011 12:23AM PDT

Linksys E3000. I started this thread in this forum but it should really have been in wireless/networking.

Regardless, I became one of the unsuspecting and trusting Linksys brood that
got burned by the fact that the Linksys E3000 does NOT NOT work! at least with
Windows Vista Home Premium.

The Atheros WiFi driver is not upgradable to work with this router.

It turned out to be a clunker for me.

I wanted to play frisbee golf with it after all of the hours wasted
with the new "cisco" trained "linksys" tech support *&&^%.

In the past, Linksys routers have worked very well for me and the tech support
has been great.

When they got bought out by Cisco, the quantity increased but the quality
(attention to detail?) went bye bye.

I am now looking at the Netgear WNDR3700 instead.

Good choice?

Bob, I followed your links, thannks for that.

fix for atheros AR5007 linksys conflict
Apr 6, 2011 2:34AM PDT

all you need to do is update to software version 9.1.0.328.... i found it on a czechoslovakian website (i know, sounds sketchy right?) but it works!!

I did the firewall/proxy/ping/uninstall/reset song and dance for a while, and yes i know device manager will tell you that you're running the best and newest version available (no update since 2007 really?)

download driver 9.1.0.328 properties/driver/update driver/browse and select your downloaded driver.....and POOF!! MAGIC!! it works!! but hey if it doesnt work its easy enough to roll back to previous driver and just log on as "guest ssid"

Would you

happen to know the website address? I found one like that but it
was only a listing of all the different drivers and I couldn't find
a download link at all.

So, how is the router working now? How long have you had it?

Thanks.

i tried the download in firefox but it just wldnt let me do it...so i tried it in chrome and i get the following message...
"web page at http://download2.dvd-driver.cz/atheros/drivers/ar5xxx/vista-9.1.0.328-whql.zip might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error."

yes trying to update the driver to connect it to my linksys wireless -dunno if it is e3000 or sthg else..found the above model number on it...its a pretty old router. about 4 years...and always worked fine until i tried to connect to it with a machine running on Vista....

ah, i see
Apr 15, 2011 12:53AM PDT

ok, this is a different router and a differnt issue. your model router is not compatible with vista (well, its not on the list of compatible routers....will it work? thats another question) are you running this computer wired or wireless? there is a firmware update for the router that should allow you to work with the vista computer WIRED to the router, as for wireless i am not sure.... i'd be glad to walk you through a firmware update if thats what you want to do

You are absolutely right!
Sep 8, 2011 2:08AM PDT

I have to admit, I was really, really skeptical about getting the driver from a .cz site, especially when listed as an "Unofficial Mirror", but sure enough, after trying everything else, and seeing your post, I went there, downloaded the 9.1.0.328 drivers and voila, it works! Great, thanks!

New driver plus REGEDIT
Oct 26, 2011 11:35AM PDT

Great post GR1FF! I had the same exact problem. I have a Linksys E3000 and my stepson has a Windows Vista machine. He always had to sign in as a guest. So tonight I finally looked into the problem.
I went to the Czech site and downloaded the 9.1.0.328 driver and installed it. Rebooted the machine. No change - still didn't work.
So then I tried the "Let me fix it myself" section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233. Rebooted the machine and viola! His laptop can now connect to my Linksys router.
But I'm not sure that the new driver had a role in getting things right. I didn't want to back it out as I didn't want to "fix something that wasn't broke" anymore. So for now, I'll say that the solution for me was to do these two things -- install the updated driver AND perform the registry edit.
A word of caution about # 2 in "Let me fix it myself". The instruction refers generically to a GUID. It was not readily apparent which GUID went with which network adapter as there were four of them listed in Device Manager. So I guessed that they were in the same order. The Atheros was the first one listed in the Network Adapter section of Device Manager so I selected the first GUID in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces. I guessed correctly.

ive had the router since yesterday. works great. my pc, xbox, ipod touch all had no problems getting on internet....just my laptop. altough i was able to get on through the guest account...this REALLY bugged the crap out of me LOL! so many other people have this problem as well. just to let you know, i did roll back the driver to the previous install and got on my network (internet only) as guest jsut to make sure i could...then re-installed new driver and it still works perfectly. hope this helps you solve this issue

Just to clarify one more time....

I have since uninstalled the e3000.

I am going to take your advice and try it again.

Once I complete the install, log in as guest, go to the .cz website
install driver.... then reboot?

I hope this works, thanks in advance if it goes well... or notHappy

Apr 6, 2011 1:16PM PDT

open control panel, select hardware and sound, click on the device manager, select network adapters, right clcik on the aterhos AR5007 and select update driver software. now select the browse my computer option to install in manually. select the location of the driver on your computer and click next. should finish installing in about a minute or so. no need to reboot, now just select your network from the list of available ones. that should give you full access to local and internet.. have any problems or questions, just ask.

Thanks a lot GR1FF. I had put it back in the box.
You have satisfied one customer on this end for sure.

You should contact Linksys and tell them to hire you as
a tech support person as you are the only one who could
pull me out of this funk!

I had found this driver previously but there was so much
"garbaaaage" on the website I just quit trying.

No easy .exe file with this one.

Cheers.

Just bought a Cisco E2500 and ran into the Local issue you discussed. I had to message tech support and was told that I had to update my driver/call HP. I couldn't find a driver newer than 2007 but your link took me to the right one and I'm happy to say I'm writing this on my wireless network.
Thanks so much for the postings.

Feb 1, 2012 1:32PM PST

I have a Sony Vaio with the 'LAN-Express AS IEEE 802.11g PCI-E Adapter", which is an Atheros brand. I could use internet with my tablet, my roommate could connect too, just not with this laptop. I was able to get an IP address and proper gateway + DNS server IPs but it just wouldnt communicate. I tried updating the drivers via that Czech site and Windows said it already had the latest driver, so I didn't pursue that any further.
