WinZip Encripted

Oct 8, 2005 5:42AM PDT

I have a folder on my computer with some private files in it. I would like to keep it on the computer as I access it daily but would like it to be safe from anyone on the internet gaining access. If I keep it zipped with WinZip is this safe? Could anyone on the internet steal it?

Re: encryption

Janenolan,

Any encryption software that lets you type in a key each time you access the file or archive is safe enough, unless you encounter professional spies or let a key logger program crawl in into your computer. Even Word encryption should do quite well.

If you've got Windows XP it might suffice to make the folder in which they reside "private". Then only you can access them, not even another administrator. But I must admit that any malware running in your account might transmit it world-wide.

And, of course, the important thing: don't forget the encryption key or password!

Hope this helps.

I'll write no.

With what you noted, I must write no.

Here's why.

1. Zip files are easily opened. Proof? http://www.lostpassword.com

2. If you store passwords and more, a trojan that sneaks by what protection can look in the PROTECTED STORAGE. What's that? Read http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7813-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=119247&messageID=1353529

3. You didn't mention firewall, antivirus, turning off sharing, or staying out of Internet Explorer and Outlook. These are prime infection avenues for Windows.

4. If you run Windows 2000 or XP, try the EWIDO demo from http://www.download.com
