WinXP SP2 - Wireless net killer?

by upbeatdad / October 9, 2004 2:59 AM PDT

As soon as I upgraded to WinXP Service Pack 2, the wireless network disappeared. Several hours later, still without a wireless connection, I decided that I was chasing the wrong demon. Instead of trying to remove, reinstall and reconfigure my Netgear equipment to work under the 'improved' WinXP SP2, I simply removed the Service Pack.
Problem solved. Has anybody else done the SP2 upgrade and NOT had a problem with their wireless connection?

I had the same problem with one of the laptop I was working on. I don't intall os update or sp2 on laptops anymore. They work fine w/o the updates as long as you secure you system with personal firewall, adaware, spybot and spyblaster. I find that sp2 is okay for desktops but laptops are antoher issue.

I've encountered a similar problem with a notebook I just bought. The brother of one of my co-workers also came across this problem where the NIC stops picking up the assigned IP after SP2 was installed. This fellow said his brother solved the problem by removing SP2.

These threads appear to describe problems similar to the one you're having so you may want to check them out:

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
