Re:WinXP Pro- no boot after SP1. Call Dell.

Some units like HP had a not-so-stock install of the OS and required some patch before you installed SP1. Ask Dell if they had a similar issue for your model.

The Winxp is a self
Dec 15, 2003 8:33PM PST

Installed OS, originally a ME slug-,installed XP about 8 months ago-very seldom connected to internet-but going to connected more-so I thought SP1 would be a good idea..sort of dislike to do a fresh install because the 1st time was a bear getting all the hardware up and right-I guess I could remove HD, use adapter to make a ghost onto another computer-reinstall SP1, then when it reboots-use CD and go to repair setup-which might just lead to needing to do all the patches-activate and get SP1 again-kind of like a circle within a circle....

Is your laptop supposed to be able to run XP SP1? Some don't. Again, a call to Dell may answer what is supported on this laptop.

!!! Had not thought of it that way!~!

Checked and Dell says yes-but the PCPitstop XP readiness test says "No-" Now I under stand why it was not a cakewalk to get it running in the first place- but.. all things considered it runs pretty nice-maybe just leave well enough alone- or install 98se on it- and use the XP on another computer-I'd be legal doing that-correct?? Thanks for the hint..tcn

I never saw in this thread what model it was. You are on the right track with the PCPitstop test, but what it did say "no", did it reveal why it reported this?

Here's the missing information:

1. Make/Model.

You did write Dell Inspiron, but there are hundreds of those.

2. PCPitstop failure.

Any item it complained about in particular?

-----------------------------
I can't tell you what rights you have to use what OS you have, but in short, you have licenses that read certain ways. XP has a license with teeth and will transfer to other machines if its the retail version.

A full retail Windows 98 installs without such an enforced license, so you just follow the agreements.

List of things-and other info
Dec 15, 2003 11:11PM PST

The Inspiron (PP02L) is over 3 years old, my winxp is retail,( full price even!!) if I remember right the compatability test mentioned the onbd NIC, Graphics controller, something about the usb hub, and 82801 devices. Before I installed- I had used setup to disable lots of stuff-USB,NIC,etc. and just kept on with incremental enabling items after OS had completed setup-etc. lots of seeing what was listed in boot error messages-then on another computer search internet for the dll,or whatever-burn to cdrw-put into folder on laptop C drive-reboot-point to it- and keep on digging-looking back it didn't seem too bad. But I'm sure I thought about backing out a couple of times-.

That's a tough one. But clues are there.

The latest BIOS Dell offers would be a good start. Next, the onboard chips may need motherboard or drivers and that's why you often end up disabling the onboard USB or other items. Often noted as why a Windows OS crashes when you plug in some USB device at http://www.usbman.com

Re-reading a few posts, this would be my short list:

1. Latest BIOS.
2. Unplug all things USB, consider disabling it.
3. CDRW recording software can make SP1 stumble. What do you have? (Hopefully not Easy CD Creator?)
