it may or may not be located on the case. Most notebooks will have the official Windows sticker with the product key number on the bottom of the unit. Many desktops will have it on the side of the case. If you don't have it there, check all of the CDs that came with your computer. There should be a product key number along with the Windows XP Pro CD. You can also download, install and run Belarc if your computer is up and running. It identifies everything installed including hardware, software and product key numbers.
If you can't find the product key number and the computer isn't running so you can install Belarc, you will most likely need to call Microsoft.
Google a program called KEYFINDER. It will tell you the product activation code. Anybody out there remember the website for this? I'm having a senior moment!

That will give you the Product INSTALL key if windows is up and running, it will not give you an ACTIVATION CODE
only M$ will provide that. If you cannot activate it over the net, you can call M$.
Unless this is an illegal copy your trying to activate, in which case I don't think I would call them.
i've had xp on my computer for a long time and it wasnt a...legit copy. but i have returned from a week away where others ahve beeen using the computer and its asking me for an activation code and not allowing me to enter user accounts till i do. i cant exactly call M$ so i was wondering if you had any advice... attempted key finder for teh hell of it no luck
any help would be apreciated
A key finder only helps if you have a legitimate key entered into Windows but lost the original sticker and need to recover it before reformatting. Since you have no legitimate key your only option is to purchase a license to Windows XP and then input that key. And note n 'upgrade' license is insufficient...you'll need to purchase the full version.
