WinME: Not enough memory to install Win update

Mar 4, 2004 12:38PM PST

Building new system: Abit IS7 865PE, Pentium 4 2.8G 800 FSB, Crucial memory 2 x 512MB DIMM 64MX64 DDR 3200 [CT6464Z40BA.8T] in slots 1 and 3, Gigabyte Radeon 9200SE Gaphics Accelerator Model GV-R92S128T.

I have been able to install all the WinME updates except the Windows Media Player update [KB828026]. The update downloads but when it starts to install a popup window says there is not enough memory to run this program and you should quit other programs. Something is definitely wrong as I have 1.0G of memory plus 512M for a swap file. Anyone know what the problem is?

Incidentally, after many attempts to install the graphics accelerator (it would hang with a black screen and then the blue screen of death) I tried installing it without previously running the Intel Chipset Softwate Utility. Since everything seemed to be working ok, I assumed the Intel utility wasn't necessary. I do not intend to use the RAID or SATA capabilities. Is it likely that not running the Intel Chipset Utility would cause the memory problem, and if it would, how do I deal with the problem of not being able to install the graphics accelerator card after running the Intel Chipset Software Utility?

Thank you very much for your response. This kind of problem with WinME is another reason for me to seriously consider moving up to WinXP.

Moved my better half from ME to Windows 2000.

I have XP Pro here, but since I got a better deal on 2000, and with all the work on XP drivers... A little known effect is that 2000 has never been in better shape.

The move was painless and no more 64 kilobyte memory pools that run dry (yada yada...)

But if you must stick with ME, review the Memory and Optimizing Windows at http://www.aumha.org/articles.htm and try to be Parasite Free.

Parasite removal programs.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0 notes the five scanning tools and removal tools that are fairly safe. If one does encounter an issue, its always been damage done by the MALWARE. The most common issue being Layered Service Provider replacement which you can use LSPFIX (Hint: use http://www.google.com to find).

The thread has follow on discussions about new links if you don't want to use Google to find an item.
