General discussion

winfixer and cashback self installed

Aug 4, 2005 1:40AM PDT

I have tried system restore on my XP operating system and these programs still don't go away. I am suspecting these are programs that track things I do, or are some sort of trojan. I am a mainframe human and pcs are new to me, especially when it comes to how to get rid of these pests. Any and all help would be much appreciated!

Your friendly visitors...
Aug 4, 2005 3:00AM PDT

It appears that two visitors have decided to invite themselves into your computer without your permission, or even an extra bed set up. Wink CashBack is spyware, while WinFixer is a trojan.

My first question is what do you use for computer security? If the answer is nothing, download the free programs Avast Antivirus, ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall, Microsoft Antispyware, and SpyBot now. These utilities should be set to run at startup, and will not only allow you to remove your current guests, but prevent new ones from coming in the front door without at least knocking first. Wink

Hope this helps,
John

That's it?

Please get back to us and let me know if that worked. I've spent three days trying to get rid of this Winfixer thing and things are only getting worse. Evry website I've searched offers a different solution. And none have worked for me. I'm about to reformat my hard drive and lose everything just to get rid of this annoying crap1

HELP
Aug 12, 2005 11:50AM PDT

I have Mcafee spyware and ever since this thing decided to install itself it has not worked properly would you suggest rebooting the computer into safe mode and then trying to delete it? I have looked the program up on the computer and it says it doesn't exist but the icon is on my desktop and it tries to install every time I start the computer. It says that it is located in downloaded programs but when I go to the folder winfixer is not there.

Jmhal, More Help...

In addition to McAfee Antispyware, please download, install, update, then run ALL of the free spyware programs at the links below. They will all find something different so it's a good idea to use them all. After installing and updating, then restart into Safe Mode and run everything you have, repeatedly, until they come up clean.

Also turn off system restore
Aug 13, 2005 12:12AM PDT

when running your scans. Some of the more aggressive pests will hide in the system restore and reinfect your computer when you reboot. Once your computer comes up clean, turn system restore back on.

finally got it
Aug 14, 2005 12:42PM PDT

I was finally able to delete winfixer by rooting through the downloaded files on my computer until I located winfixer, copied its location and resarted in safe mode since winfixer protected itself from being deleted and caused my anti-virus and anti-spyware programs to malfunction. I was then able to go back to the location on my hard drive while in safe mode and delete it manually.

How did you reconize the file when you found it?
