WinFax Pro not disconnecting.

Sep 26, 2005 11:00PM PDT

Windows XP Pro SP2 installed with Symantec WinFax pro 10.03.

Background Info: When WinFax receives a voice call, it will automatically ''hang up'' and disconnect the phone line when the calling party hangs up on realizes a Fax machine has been reached. This is the same with a Fax call.

My problem: On a newly installed Win Fax Pro 10.03:
When Win Fax receives a voice call, it does not ''hang up'' when the calling party hangs up. The ''Line Status'' window still shows WinFax as ''Receiving''. I am not able to ''Cancel'' - the Window refuses to close. I can only close the Window by ''X''ing out. However, this does not disconnect the phone line, meaning that Fax as well as Voice calls cannot be received. I can return to normal only by rebooting. There are no problems when a Fax call is received. I am quite familiar with Symantec WinFax, having used it before with Win98 and Win Me, and therefore know of its ''behavior'' I have been to Symantec support web site, but their automated support assistant did not find any issue with WinFax.

Has any WinFax user out there come across similar problems and solved it ? Thanks.

I rebuilt our fax machine when that happened.
Sep 26, 2005 11:12PM PDT

I changed the motherboard to an Intel chipset, then wiped the drive and started over with a fresh install of the OS, then all the latest BIOS and drivers for motherboard, video, audio, modem and finally reinstalled Winfax and its patches.

If the issues continue, replace the modem too.

Hope this helps.

Rebuild the Fax --
Sep 27, 2005 12:03AM PDT

Thanks for the suggestions. My computer is not broken, so there is no way I will get a new MOBO and the reinstall, just for the sake of making WinFax work. I guess I will take up other options. Symantec WinFax is not the one and only out there. Back to Win XP Fax !

For us, it was the way out.

I know it seems far out to do all that but we use the network feature and it must work proper. The former PC did work fine but not with Winfax. So out went the AMD system and we rebuilt it all.

Hope this clarifies why we did that.

Thanks for the clarification. Next time, I will make sure to have a Pentium inside !

Let me clarify this a bit.

We were "bound" to get this box working. So we did everything Symantec asked. While my bet is some modem driver or modem was the issue, the AMD boards can be a problem at times if the BIOS and motherboard drivers are not bugfree.

Our older Athlon system did work, but not 100%. We needed to stop tinkering with it so we went with the wholesale replacement approach.

Re Symantec WinFax..

Thanks. Yes. Symantec should have made their products trouble-free for their customers, instead of telling them to do this and that to rectify a problem. I had the problem with Ver. 10.02, and now 10.03. I have not tried upgrading to 10.04 yet... Anyway, once contacted, their support is good.
